Changing Your Address When Moving

When you are preparing to move to a new home, you will need to remember to change your address. Fortunately, this does not have to be a complicated or stressful process. Follow these tips to change your address easily and make your transition to your new home a smooth one.

Double Check Your New Address – This may seem obvious, but it is a quick step that can potentially save you a lot of time and trouble later.

Go Online – Previously, you had to go to the post office to apply for a legal change of address. Although this is still an option, now you can skip the lines and save time by going online to the US Postal Service website (USPS.com).

Get a New Driver’s License – After you have changed your address through the USPS, you will need to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to request a new driver’s license with your new address. This can also be completed online.

Make a List of Who to Notify – Take a look at the mail you receive, and make a list of any senders who will need to know your new address. Definitely contact all utility companies, medical offices, your bank and credit card company, as well as your friends and family.

Update Magazine Subscriptions – If you regular receive magazines or catalogues, you will either need to update your subscriptions to your new address or cancel them. This is a good time to take a look at how many magazines and catalogues you really need.
