Choosing a Moving Method
Whether it’s across town or across the country, any move requires preparation. But not everyone needs the same amount or type of preparation. This should be determined on a case-by-case basis, assessing the specific factors of your potential move.
There are three primary methods of moving from one home to another. Understanding the differences between them will help you decide which would work best for your situation.
Full assistance moving
This is most common when you need plenty of support and have a large home to be packed and moved. Professional moving services will handle all of the loading, transportation, delivery and unloading, allowing you to relax and avoid the sweat and strain of the move. This type of relocation can be costly, however. Moving a small apartment can run in the $800 range while a four bedroom home can top $20,000. If you have the means and want a stress-free transition, full assistance moving is the method to choose.
“You pack” moving
This type of relocation can be a comfortable compromise for those that don’t mind packing, but want to avoid the hassle of driving a truck. A moving service will provide you with a storage container or pod at your home, which you load with the property you need moved. Then the container will be picked up and driven to your new home, where you will unload everything inside. This a less costly option than full assistance moving, and is also convenient in the flexibility of transportation.
DIY moving
The do-it-yourself process involves handling the entire moving process yourself — from renting a truck to packing and loading to driving and unloading. You will inevitably need help from friends and family, especially when loading and unloading. This is the best option for those who are moving shorter distances and haven’t accumulated a great deal of furniture and belongings. For longer distance moves, the mileage charges that go with renting a truck can add up and must be taken into account when deciding which method to choose. Moving yourself can be time consuming and tough, but it is a good option in some situations.
When it comes to moving, every situation is unique. While your aging parents might need a full assistance move, that might not fit your budget or your home. Choosing the method of your relocation is the first step to a successful transition.
